Fishing Costa Rica
Deep Sea Fishing Costa Rica
In my opinion, the Southern Nicoya Peninsula has some of the best fishing in the world. The Nicoya Peninsula naturally sticks out into the Pacific Ocean so the waters off of Mal Pais and Santa Teresa are prime grounds for fishing. If you head south from the fishing village of Mal Pais you will reach Cabo Blanco National Park and Cabo Blanco Island. There is a steep drop off after the island and two major currents converge so lots of bait and game fish tend to frequent this area. Heading North from Mal Pais you will find some other great fishing grounds off of Santa Teresa and Playa Hermosa. The waters are normally very calm in the morning and the evening so the ride is quite pleasant.
The tours leave from the fishing village of Mal Pais. Watching the local guys launch the boats is truly a special sight. The boats, or “pangas”, are rolled down the beach on logs to reach the water’s edge. It is a very rustic but efficient technique. Upon return the boats are hauled out using electric winches. Don’t let the rustic techniques fool you because most boats run high efficiency 4 stroke engines and they provide all the bait and tackle necessary for a great day of fishing.
Common catches include yellow fin tuna, mahi mahi, wahoo, rooster fish, sailfish, mackerel, red snapper, grouper, and more. Tours leave daily from the fishing village of Mal Pais. The fishing village is just minutes away from our collection of beach front homes and vacation rentals. A fishing tour starts around $50 an hour for the boat and most boats can accommodate up to 6 people comfortably. Contact us today to book a tour or request more information.
