Surfing
The beaches of the southern Nicoya peninsula have some of the most consistent surf in the world. This stretch of coastline offers something for surfers of all abilities. The beaches of Playa Carmen and Playa Hermosa have ideal conditions for first-time surfers. In Santa Teresa, you will find multiple surf shops with board rentals and lessons, or we will gladly arrange one for you. For those with experience, you will find consistent surf and a variety of breaks to explore from the reef breaks and point breaks of Mal Pais to the fast barreling beach break of Santa Teresa.
Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Mal Pais is the perfect spot to experience the fastest growing water sport in the world. Take a lesson or a guided tour from our local stand up paddle board center here in Mal Pais. Stand up paddle boarding is a great way to explore the coastline and to experience one of Costa Rica’s famous sunsets. There are also great waves to ride for more experienced paddle boarders.
ATV Tours
ATVs are a very popular mode of transportation here in Santa Teresa and Mal Pais. It is a fun way to explore the beautiful beaches of the Pacific Coast and the perfect vehicle to forge rivers and streams of the Costa Rican jungle.
Horseback Riding
Horses…the original means of transportation here in Mal Pais and Santa Teresa. Enjoy a sunset tour along the beach and through the jungle with one of the local guides.
Waterfalls
The nearby town of Montezuma is home to some amazing waterfalls that are a very popular destination. The town of Montezuma has some great restaurants and shops with beautiful handmade jewelry and other handmade crafts. If your schedule permits, we definitely recommend taking a day to go check out Montezuma.
Cabo Blanco National Park
Mal Pais is home to Costa Rica’s oldest national park, Cabo Blanco. The park was established in 1963. The 1250 hectares (over 3,088 acres) is home to some amazing wildlife and plant life. You can explore the marked trails through the park on your own, or take a guided tour with a local to learn about the plants and wildlife.
Yoga and Pilates
Costa Rica is becoming a very popular destination for the practice of Yoga. You will find multiple yoga and pilates studios in Mal Pais, Santa Teresa, and Playa Hermosa. Most yoga decks are either beachfront or ocean view so we guarantee it will be a memorable experience.
Massage
Here in Costa Rica we don’t need the pre-recorded tapes of nature sounds to help you relax while having a massage. Those sounds are naturally occurring so it is the perfect environment for a relaxing massage or a deep tissue massage after a long day of surfing. There are lots of beautiful spas in Santa Teresa and Mal Pais, or we can arrange a private masseuse to come to your luxury vacation rental.
Snorkeling
The volcanic reefs and tide pools of Mal Pais and Playa Hermosa provide great opportunities to snorkel and spearfish. A day trip to Tortuga Island off of Tambor can also be arranged. You will have a chance to snorkel on the reefs off of Tortuga Island and then head into the beach to explore the island. While you are relaxing on the beach, your tour guide will prepare lunch using local fish and other fresh ingredients.
Fishing
The fishing off of Cabo Blanco National park is some of the best in Costa Rica. Cabo Blanco Island provides the perfect habitat and conditions to attract all types of fish. Tours leave daily from the fishing village of Mal Pais. Common catches include yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, sailfish, roosterfish, red snapper, amberjack, and more.
Zip Line Canopy Tour
In Mal Pais, right next to Cabo Blanco National Park, you will find Canopy Mal Pais. On this exciting tour, you will soar through the jungle across steel cables landing on various platforms. The zip lining will get your adrenaline going, but as you rest on platforms high above the jungle floor you will have great opportunities to observe the wildlife and vegetation.
